Sandy coves, wild ponies and old lighthouses on Llanddwyn Island in Anglesey

Llanddwyn Island isn’t technically an island, but a small peninsula attached to the end of Newborough Warrens and the adjoining beach. It becomes cut off from the main beach at high tide, and then for a short time, it is an island. Either way, it truly is a magical place with a feeling of timeless antiquity.

At low tide it is a place a beauty and tranquility. At every turn you’ll find small sheltered sandy coves, perfect for just sitting down and taking it all in. At this time of the year, the grass is full of wild flowers of every hue, wild ponies graze and the sight and sound of seabirds fill the air as they look for mates.

And once you’re done sitting and gazing back to the mountains of Snowdonia over on the mainland, there’s plenty to explore; two very beautiful old lighthouses (the perfect subject for some great photographs), an old well with a tale attached, as well as the ruins of Dwywens church after which the island is named. It’s also the reason it’s known by its alternative name of, The Lovers Isle.
